Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: What's the Difference?
If you're choosing an engagement ring today, you'll almost certainly weigh up lab-grown against natural (mined) diamonds. The short answer: they are the same material, and to the eye they are identical. The differences are in how they're made, what they cost, and how they're sourced.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond — pure crystallised carbon with the same hardness, sparkle and fire as a mined one. It is not a simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite, which are different materials that only look diamond-like. Independent labs such as IGI and GIA grade lab-grown diamonds on the very same scale as natural stones.
The only real difference is origin. A natural diamond formed over billions of years deep in the earth; a lab-grown diamond is created in a few weeks in a controlled facility that recreates those same conditions of heat and pressure.
How they compare
- Appearance: identical to the naked eye — even a jeweller needs specialised equipment to tell them apart.
- Quality: both are graded on the same 4 Cs (cut, colour, clarity, carat).
- Price: lab-grown typically costs significantly less for the same size and quality, so your budget buys a larger or higher-grade stone.
- Ethics & environment: lab-grown avoids mining, and reputable growers can trace every stone's origin.
- Resale: like most jewellery, neither holds its full retail value second-hand — buy a ring to wear and love, not as an investment.
